Our Legacy in Canine Health
BioShift Research Foundation honors the important work previously carried out under the KetoPet and Visionary Pet initiatives that focused on dog health, nutrition, and quality of life.
In 2014, a flagship program was established to give shelter dogs with terminal cancer a “forever home”. These dogs, often with only weeks to live, were placed on a ketogenic diet — high in fat and very low in carbohydrates. Using PET imaging, KetoPet observed how this nutritional approach impacted tumor biology and overall health outcomes.
Alongside nutritional therapy, each dog received the highest standard of veterinary and oncology care available, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, exercise programs, and advanced diagnostics when required. Remarkly, more than half of the dogs who graduated from KetoPet program continued to enjoy activities like walks, play, and companionship beyond their original prognoses - and some even remained cancer-free.
This early work helped shape our understanding of how metabolism and energy utilization interact with disease processes.
-
KetoPet began with a simple mission: help dogs live longer, happier lives using metabolic approached rooted in nutrition and metabolic science.
Through ketogenic diets and extensive treatment intervention, KetoPet observed that many dogs experienced improved quality of life.
-
As KetoPet shared its findings and helped more families, a challenge emerged: implementing a ketogenic diet for dogs.
In response, partners and compassionate canine nutrition advocates developed Visionary Pet Foods.
Visionary Pet Foods is a brand of pre-packaged ketogenic dog food based on the nutritional protocols of KetoPet. Its development not only helped make keotgenic feeeding more accesible for pet parents but also supported KetoPet through food donations and contributions tied to product sales
From KetoPet to BioShift
Today, BioShift Research Foundation continues to pursue metabolic science that may influence disease biology across humans and companion animals.
Our work in cancer detection and metabolic therapy draws on the same biological principles that inspired Keto Pet:
Metabolism influences how cells function and respond to stress
Nutritional and metabolic states can affect energy supply and immune responses
Animal models can provide translational insights relevant to human health
While BioShift does not operate a veterinary facility or provide individual dietary counseling, our commitment to canine cancer care has not ended.
BioShift continued to support select canine cancer cases using a modified version of our metabolic CO₂ delivery system.
This work reflects our belief that metabolic science is not species-specific.
Each opportunity contributes to broadening our understanding of how modulating metabolism can influence tumor biology.
We are grateful for the foundation KetoPet established and the community that helped shape this work. Grounded in measurable outcomes, and compassion for both human and animal patients — this legacy continues.
Contributions to this program sustain translational metabolic research across species through treatment system refinement and support of observational case studies that help strengthen our understanding of how metabolism may influence cancer biology in both companion animals and humans.
